A guitar is more than a collection of wood, metal and electronics.

It is an instrument that responds to the hands of the player. Every detail, from the shape of the neck and condition of the frets to the way the strings move, the hardware functions and the electronics respond, contributes to the overall playing experience.

At Fret & Grain, we believe that every guitar deserves proper care, thoughtful workmanship and respect for the instrument itself, regardless of its age, value or brand. A well-loved beginner guitar can be just as meaningful to its owner as a high-end professional instrument. Our approach remains the same: understand the instrument, understand what it needs, and carry out the work with care and purpose.

With over 21 years of experience in guitar repair, setup and servicing, our work is built on a simple philosophy: do the job properly, pay attention to the details, and never compromise workmanship for speed.

We do not believe that a guitar simply needs to be "playable."

A guitar can be technically playable while still feeling uncomfortable. It can have acceptable measurements while still failing to inspire confidence. It can function correctly while still having hidden issues that affect its performance, reliability or long-term condition.

Our goal is to go beyond simply making an instrument work.

We aim to help every guitar play its best, feel its best and perform as reliably as possible.

From precision setups, fret levelling and detailed fretwork to electronics, hardware servicing, neck angle optimisation, nut work and comprehensive cleaning, every service begins with careful assessment. We look at the instrument as a complete system, because no single adjustment exists entirely on its own.

A change in neck relief can affect action. Action can influence playability and intonation. A poorly cut nut can make an otherwise excellent setup feel inaccurate. Fret condition, neck geometry, hardware stability and string choice can all influence the final result.

That is why we believe in understanding the relationship between every component rather than simply following a fixed set of measurements.

Specifications are useful, but the instrument and the player always come first.

Every guitar is different.

Wood moves. Necks change over time. Frets wear. Hardware ages. Players have different techniques, string gauges, tunings and expectations. What works perfectly for one guitarist may not be right for another.

For this reason, we approach each instrument individually. Measurements provide the foundation, experience provides the understanding, and careful workmanship brings everything together.

Whenever possible, we also believe that good repair work should be clean, precise and reversible. A repair should respect the original instrument rather than unnecessarily compromise it. Modifications should be carefully planned. Components should be installed neatly. Work beneath a pickguard or inside a control cavity should receive the same level of attention as the parts that are immediately visible.

Because true craftsmanship is not only about how the finished work looks.

It is also about the details nobody sees.

After more than two decades of working on guitars, one principle remains unchanged: there is always something more to learn.

Experience teaches you what to look for. Mistakes teach you what not to overlook. Every instrument presents its own challenges, and every repair is an opportunity to better understand the relationship between craftsmanship, engineering and the needs of the player.
