We believe in taking the time to do things properly.

At Fret & Grain, every acoustic bass is carefully diagnosed, measured, adjusted and play-tested. Neck relief, string height, saddle height, nut height and intonation all work together to determine how the instrument feels, responds and sounds.

String height is especially important on an acoustic bass. Too low can cause fret buzz and affect the instrument's natural response, while too high can make fretting tiring and affect intonation. The balance between the bass and treble sides also plays an important role in playability, projection and tonal response.

With over two decades of experience and several thousand instruments set up, we understand that every acoustic bass has its own workmanship, construction and tolerances. Each instrument is assessed individually rather than simply applying fixed measurements.
