We believe in taking the time to do things properly.

At Fret & Grain, every classical guitar is carefully diagnosed, measured, adjusted and play-tested. Neck relief, string height, saddle height, nut height and intonation all work together to determine how the instrument feels, responds and sounds.

String height is especially important on a classical guitar. Set too low, it can cause fret buzz and affect clean playing. Set too high, the guitar can become tiring to play and make fretting more difficult. The balance between the bass and treble sides also plays an important role in playability, projection and tonal response.

With over two decades of experience and several thousand guitars set up, we understand that every instrument has its own workmanship, construction and manufacturing tolerances. We do not simply apply the same measurements to every guitar. Each instrument is assessed individually, taking into consideration its construction, string tension, playing style and the player's requirements.

We diagnose, measure, adjust, play-test and refine.
