BARE KNUCKLE PICKUPS

MORE THAN JUST A PICKUP INSTALLATION

At Fret & Grain, we are proud to be the official distributor of Bare Knuckle Pickups in Singapore.

But our relationship with Bare Knuckle Pickups goes far beyond simply supplying pickups. We work extensively with their range and understand that choosing and installing the right pickup is about much more than selecting a model based on output or genre.

A pickup is a critical part of the entire guitar system. Its character interacts with the guitar's construction, woods, hardware, electronics, potentiometer values, capacitor selection, wiring configuration and, most importantly, the player's technique and musical requirements.

That is why every Bare Knuckle pickup installation at Fret & Grain is approached with technical understanding, experience and attention to detail.

AN EXTENSIVE RANGE. REAL PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE.

We carry an extensive range of Bare Knuckle Pickups, covering everything from vintage-inspired low-output designs to modern high-output humbuckers, single coils and artist signature models.

More importantly, we understand the individual character behind the specifications.

DC resistance alone does not tell the full story of a pickup. Magnet type, coil geometry, winding pattern, inductance, resonant frequency and output all contribute to the final voice of the pickup.

An Alnico II pickup can respond very differently from an Alnico V design. A ceramic magnet can deliver a completely different attack, low-end response and overall feel. Two pickups with similar DC resistance can also sound dramatically different depending on how they are designed and wound.

We take these characteristics into consideration when helping customers choose the right Bare Knuckle model for their guitar and playing requirements.

The goal is not simply to install a popular pickup.

The goal is to find the right pickup for the guitar and the player.

UNDERSTANDING MAGNET POLARITY, PHASING AND COMPATIBILITY

Pickup installation is not always as simple as connecting a few wires.

Modern guitars can incorporate complex wiring systems including coil splits, coil taps, series and parallel switching, phase switching, custom switching systems and combinations of pickups from different manufacturers.

For these systems to work correctly, it is essential to understand magnetic polarity and electrical phase.

At Fret & Grain, we are highly familiar with Bare Knuckle's pickup configurations, magnet polarity and phasing relationships. This is particularly important when combining pickups, modifying existing guitars or integrating Bare Knuckle Pickups into guitars with non-standard electronics.

Incorrect polarity or phase relationships can result in thin, hollow or weak-sounding combined positions. A pickup may appear to be wired correctly, yet still produce an undesirable out-of-phase sound when combined with another pickup.

We carefully consider both the magnetic and electrical relationship between pickups to ensure that the final configuration performs as intended.

This becomes especially important when:

  • Combining Bare Knuckle Pickups with pickups from other manufacturers

  • Replacing only one pickup in an existing set

  • Installing humbuckers alongside single coils or P90s

  • Creating custom HSS, HSH or mixed pickup configurations

  • Designing coil split or partial coil split circuits

  • Installing phase switching

  • Building series and parallel switching systems

  • Integrating advanced switching solutions

Every guitar presents its own combination of components, specifications and challenges.

Understanding how those components interact is what separates a simple installation from a properly engineered pickup system.

PICKUP SPACING MATTERS

Another detail that is often overlooked is pickup spacing.

Not all guitar pickups have the same pole-piece spacing. Depending on the bridge, neck or middle position, guitars can use different string spacing, and the pickup must be appropriately matched to the instrument.

This is particularly important with humbuckers, where bridge and neck models may be available in different spacing specifications.

A bridge pickup is typically positioned under a wider string spread than a neck pickup. On many guitars, this means the bridge humbucker requires wider pole-piece spacing to better align with the strings, while the neck pickup uses standard spacing.

The exact requirements, however, depend on the guitar's bridge design, string spacing and pickup configuration.

This becomes even more important when replacing only one pickup, mixing different pickup manufacturers or installing pickups into guitars with non-standard specifications.

At Fret & Grain, we do not simply look at whether a pickup will physically fit the cavity.

We consider string spacing, pole-piece alignment, pickup position and the intended application before installation.

For humbuckers, we also pay attention to the distinction between standard and wider-spaced bridge configurations where applicable. For single coils, P90s and other pickup formats, the physical dimensions, mounting arrangement and relationship to the strings are equally important.

Correct spacing helps ensure that the pickup is properly positioned beneath the strings and that the magnetic response remains balanced across the instrument.

It is a small detail, but these small details matter when the goal is a properly executed installation.

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS MATTERS

Even the finest pickup cannot perform at its full potential if the installation is poorly executed.

Our installation process focuses on clean wiring, reliable soldering, correct grounding and careful routing of all connections. We also consider the existing electronics and whether components such as potentiometers, capacitors, switches or output jacks are suitable for the new pickup configuration.

Pickup height is also carefully adjusted.

The distance between the pickup and the strings has a significant effect on output, clarity, attack, sustain and overall tonal balance. Setting a pickup too close or too far from the strings can dramatically change its behaviour.

We take the time to balance the pickup height and individual pole pieces where applicable, ensuring that the guitar responds evenly across the strings and performs as a complete system.

FROM PICKUP SELECTION TO FINAL SETUP

Whether you already know exactly which Bare Knuckle model you want, or need guidance in selecting the right pickup, Fret & Grain can assist throughout the entire process.

Our experience with the Bare Knuckle range allows us to consider factors such as:

  • Your guitar's construction and natural tonal characteristics

  • Pickup output and frequency response

  • Magnet type and magnetic characteristics

  • Desired gain structure and playing style

  • Clarity, attack and dynamic response

  • Compatibility with your existing pickups

  • Potentiometer and capacitor values

  • Coil split and switching requirements

  • Magnetic polarity and electrical phasing

  • Pickup height and final tonal balancing

We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

A pickup that performs exceptionally well in one guitar may behave very differently in another. The wood, construction, scale length, bridge design, string gauge, electronics and overall setup can all influence the final result.

Our job is to understand these variables and help you build a pickup configuration that makes sense for your instrument.
