Partial Coil Tap with Controlled Frequency Split

A partial coil tap can be taken a step further by combining a resistor and capacitor to create a frequency-dependent split.

For this modification, we use a 0.005µF capacitor and a 6.2kΩ resistor to shape the signal from the coil being partially bypassed.

The 6.2kΩ resistor controls how much of the coil remains in the circuit, helping retain more body and output compared with a conventional coil split.

The 0.005µF capacitor makes the effect frequency-dependent, allowing different frequencies to be affected differently. This gives us greater control over the tonal character of the split.

→ extends the effect further into the upper-midrange
→ gives a good balance of brightness and body
→ useful when you want clarity without making the pickup too thin

Eliminating Switching Pops

A 1MΩ resistor is also incorporated into the circuit to provide a DC path and help discharge any stored charge in the capacitor.

This helps prevent the unwanted "pop" or "click" that can occur when switching the modification on and off.

The Result

This combination allows us to fine-tune the pickup rather than simply switching between full humbucker and full coil split.

The result is a more controlled and refined split sound, with improved clarity while retaining more of the humbucker's natural character.
