Understanding Pickup Polarity, Phase & Hum Cancellation
When combining pickups, getting the magnetic polarity and electrical phase right is just as important as choosing the pickups themselves. These two relationships determine whether your combined sound is full and powerful, thin and hollow, or capable of rejecting unwanted hum.
A humbucker achieves noise cancellation by combining two coils that work in opposition. The coils have opposite magnetic polarities and are electrically arranged so their signal paths oppose the unwanted hum while reinforcing the guitar signal. In a conventional humbucker, the coils are connected in series, giving the familiar strong, thick output. Connecting them in parallel produces a cleaner, brighter and more single-coil-like response.
The same principle can be applied when combining two separate single-coil pickups. For the combination to cancel hum, the pickups need to have the appropriate magnetic polarity and winding relationship.
The Three Results You Need to Recognise
When testing two pickups together, the sound itself can tell you a great deal:
1. Thin, hollow and nasal
The pickups are out of phase. Their signals are partially cancelling each other.
2. Full and warm, but noisy
The pickups are in phase, but their magnetic polarity/winding relationship does not provide hum cancellation.
3. Full, warm and noticeably quieter
The pickups are in phase and hum-canceling. This is the desired combination.
Determining the Correct Pickup Relationship
Start by identifying the magnetic polarity of each pickup with a magnet polarity tester. The winding direction can then be determined from the pickup manufacturer's specifications where available.
If the pickup's manufacturer or specifications are unknown, the practical approach is to test the pickup electrically and listen to the result when combined with the other pickup. The individual start and finish of a single-coil winding cannot be reliably determined simply by looking at the pickup.
If the combined sound is thin and nasal, reverse the hot and ground connections of one pickup and test again. This changes the electrical phase relationship and can bring the two pickups into the correct relationship.
The goal is straightforward:
Correct polarity + correct phase = full tone + hum cancellation.
