WHAT SOLDER SHOULD YOU USE FOR GUITAR SOLDERING?

In guitar electronics, a solder joint is the connection between your components and your signal path. While solder itself does not determine the tone of your guitar, using the right solder and proper technique is essential for creating reliable, clean and long-lasting connections.

WHAT WE USE AT FRET & GRAIN

At Fret & Grain, we personally use 60/40 tin-lead, 1 mm diameter rosin-core solder for our guitar electronics work.

We choose 60/40 because it offers an excellent balance of low melting temperature, smooth flow and ease of application. This allows us to create reliable joints without unnecessarily exposing components to prolonged heat.

We use 1 mm diameter because it gives us good control while providing enough solder for the larger connections commonly found in guitar electronics, particularly potentiometer casings, grounding points and heavier gauge wiring.

WHY ROSIN-CORE?

The rosin flux contained within the solder helps improve solder wetting and adhesion between the solder, wire and component surface.

A properly wetted joint creates a clean and dependable electrical connection. This is especially important for pickup leads, pot terminals and grounding points, where poor soldering can result in intermittent connections, unwanted noise or future failures.

SOMETIMES, WE ADD ADDITIONAL FLUX

Although our solder already contains rosin flux, there are situations where we may apply a small amount of additional electronics-grade flux before soldering.

This is particularly useful when working with larger potentiometer casings, oxidised surfaces, older components or connections that are more difficult to wet.

Additional flux helps the solder flow and wet the surface more effectively, allowing us to achieve a clean joint without having to apply excessive heat or repeatedly rework the connection.

We use flux selectively, not excessively. The goal is to improve the soldering process and achieve a reliable joint, not to saturate the connection with flux.

WHAT ABOUT LEAD-FREE SOLDER?

Lead-free solder can certainly be used, but it generally requires higher temperatures and can be less forgiving during guitar electronics work.

Where regulations and working conditions allow, we prefer 60/40 leaded rosin-core solder because of its excellent workability, predictable behaviour and ability to produce clean joints with controlled heat.

MORE SOLDER DOES NOT MEAN A BETTER JOINT

Professional soldering is not about creating large blobs of solder.

A good joint should be properly wetted, mechanically secure, clean and free from unnecessary excess solder. The wire should also be positioned securely before solder is applied, rather than relying on solder alone to provide mechanical strength.
